Empowering future talent through STEAM Education
Unlocking Potential
"I believe that every young person should have the opportunity to experience the excitement and challenge of STE(A)M subjects, and to develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the 21st century."
Alan West MBE
UK and International STE(A)M training
STEM and STEAM are hot topics for curriculum development in many countries. We run training programmes to support teachers and adults other than teachers develop a shared understanding of what is meant by STEM in Education. Namely that STEM is not a subject in isolation but a process for solving genuine challenges and problems using the processes of scientific investigation and engineering design process disciplines.
As a high-level STEM consultant, Alan West worked initially with the British Council and MOET (Ministry Of Education and Training) in Viet Nam to review and report on STEM opportunities within existing curriculum models.
Recommendations in the final report to MOET are now under active consideration by school leaders.
Pedagogical support for professional development
Preparing for and delivering STEM entitlement to students frequently requires a pedagogical shift for teachers and the ecosystem of support available to schools and colleges.
We have experience of tailoring ToT (Training of Trainer) programmes that have operated with groups in the UK, Viet Nam, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.
Our programmes are a combination of face-to-face and virtual training delivered with regional partners.
The Southeast Asia STEAM Education Network (SSEN) is a forum for these training opportunities.
Developing STE(A)M Ambassadors/Mentors
Effective STE(A)M teaching often requires the wider support from an ecosystem of university, business and community links to a school or college. Developing Ambassadors and Mentors with current and topical knowledge and expertise to support student centred project-based learning is therefore a critical factor in bringing about meaningful changes in the experience of students.
We work with Higher Education partners to build Ambassador and Mentor confidence and competencies in supporting school-based student STE(A)M programmes.
In Viet Nam this training includes the development of support for the British Science Association CREST Awards. This is achieved through an Agency Agreement with the British Science Association for Viet Nam and close collaboration with STEAMax JSC Viet Nam.
STE(A)M activity programmes for school students
Pressures on curriculum time in schools frequently restricts the scope of STE(A)M activity. We have a collection of strategies to mitigate this challenge.
We provide support models for activity that can take place in elective time within the school day or possibly off campus programmes at weekends or during vacation times where specialist facilities and experts can be brought into play.
Recent programmes include: -
-- A 3-day Automotive Evolution Programme – autonomous vehicle control at the Bilingual Middle School in Modena, Italy
-- Creating the Next Generation Climate Change Champions with Brunel Ambassadors and Ambassadors from VN-UK in Danang, Viet Nam
-- STEAMax JSC VN event-based programmes.
STE(A)M activity content development
Our Lead Consultant and Associate Consultants can provide advice and support on STE(A)M content development.
This can be specifically in the context of support for CREST project proposals or generally in terms of other school or event-based STE(A)M programmes and events.
SSEN
In partnership with educationalists and STEM specialists from across Southeast Asia and the United Kingdom, we collaborate with the Southeast Asia STEAM Education Network to deliver diverse, culturally relevant, and contextually appropriate STEM education throughout the region.
